Definition:
Physical Failure is a failure caused by progressive deterioration, wear-out, corrosion, aging, or other material degradation mechanisms over time. It is a broader term than random failure. It is not a formal term in the space of IEC 61511.
Key Points:
- Typically predictable based on time-in-service, cycles, or environmental exposure.
- Requires maintenance strategies like inspections, replacements, and preventive maintenance.
- Related from Random Failure, which occurs unpredictably during useful life.
Example:
A solenoid coil burning out suddenly is a random failure; valve seat erosion over years is a physical failure.
