Hazard Identification (HAZID)

Definition:
Hazard Identification (HAZID) is a structured approach to systematically identifying hazards within a process or system. This occurs early in a project’s development, often in the late conceptual or early basic stages. Done per the excellent ISO 17776.

Note that a HAZID would be too early to meet the requirements of an H&RA.

Key Points:

  • Often used during early project stages.
  • Can be a precursor to more detailed HAZOP studies.

Example:
A HAZID workshop occurs during basic engineering phases with all the project stakeholder and a HAZID Facilitator. During this it identified an ammonia leak from storage vessels could cause safety issues, so they make design modifications.
