Notified Body (NoBo)

Definition:
A Notified Body (NoBo) is an organization designated by a government to assess the conformity of products or systems to certain regulatory requirements. This is a term that is not used in the U.S. but more used in Europe.

A functional safety system in Europe would be written to include the NoBo in certain steps along the way. This would not be applicable in the U.S. They are involved in big picture regulatory compliance, not specific SIL determination.

Key Points:

  • Common in Europe (EU Directives).
  • Not the same as an Accreditation Body (AB) or Certification Body (CB).
  • Similar to the US structure of an Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), but they have a distinct legal structures and levels of authority.

Example:

  • TÜV Rheinland acts as a Notified Body under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
