Definition:
Validation confirms through testing and review that the installed Safety Instrumented System (SIS) meets its design and functional requirements. Often as part of the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and Site Integration Test (SIT).
Key Points:
- Typically performed after commissioning (such as all of the loop checks) but before formal startup.
- Can be easily confused as some call everything after construction and pre turnover “Commissioning.”
- It’s not the same as verification.
- Validation tests often simply execute the Proof Test.
Example:
A SIF is a pressure instrument and a valve is tested by injecting pressure to trigger the SIF in full. This would occur during the SAT.
